If you’re like me, then you love rollercoasters! The faster the better! These 8 tips and tricks for theme parks can help make it a little less scary. My family is really adventurous, so when my dad ended up with an unexpected week off, we took a spontaneous road trip to Universal Studios in Orlando, Florida. I love these kind of trips, but I was really nervous; nobody had told me what to do at theme parks. So here are 8 tips and tricks I wish someone had told me!

Tips and Tricks for Theme Parks
1. Leg pump sites
I can not recommend this enough! The top of the thigh works best for me. The seatbelts and harnesses are less likely to hit it. Plus, if you get thrown to the sides it won’t hurt.
2. Tell the worker at the front entrance
Tell the person who works at the entrance of the park. The metal detector might kill your Dexcom! That will not be a fun way to start your day!
3. Bring things to treat lows
I know, for me at least, adrenaline makes my BG drop really fast! Don’t be afraid of taking an emergency glucagon or snacks you can keep in your pocket at all times.
4. Eat what you want [in a smart way]
I KNOW that everything smells so good! But maybe get a burger or some protein before you eat that cotton candy as big as your head. Or even get some treats to take home. That way the day continues!
5. Stay high
Okay, all diabetics are different, but I found that letting my BG run higher than I usually do meant I could do more fun stuff. Then, if I needed to run to make sure that I got on the ride while the lines were short, you bet I was free to go sprinting across that park. 😛 [Definitely make sure it doesn’t get dangerous for you though.]
6. Exercise mode [for my tandem buddies] or adapt dosing
When I know I’m going to do something stressful or move a lot, I put my pump on exercise mode. And trust me, you’re gonna be walking a LOT! I got 25,000 steps in one day; as a result, I didn’t need to dose as aggressively for food either! MDI folks may need to make adjustments as they dose.
7. Dexcom patches
DUDE, YOU NEED THESE! People are gonna be people, so you have to dodge them, but they will run into you. These patches will keep your dex secure for a long time, plus they’ll be a little more noticeable so that people might give you a bit more space.
Psst… here’s my favorite place to get ’em Pump Peelz
8. Confidence is key!
When people don’t understand something, they tend to look. Trust me. I know how annoying it is when someone stares at your devices. Instead of getting self-conscious, wear ’em like battle scars! You’ve got this! Few people can say they keep themselves alive with a tiny beeper-like device! [ And yes, I have been asked if my insulin pump was a beeper. That’s a story for another time :P]
Welp, there ya have it, folks! 8 tips and tricks for theme parks that I wish somebody told me. Let me know if y’all have any tips and tricks for theme parks I should add!
